Spring has sprung! May 1, 2009

Well, happy spring everyone!  Here I had our new family calendar almost done and just got so sick over November to Jan I didn’t finish.  And now, I’ve been so busy and sick again. :(  I am tired of this for sure!  Well, I haven’t lost all the work I have done on it so I will just attempt to finish it as I can.

I hope everyone is having a great spring.  We are getting LOTS of rain.  We have our mother-daughter banquet tomorrow night.  I have been busy getting ready for that since we were on vacation last week.

Well, just wanted to drop in, since I haven’t in a long time!

A New Year! January 10, 2009

Well, a New Year, a new start.  I don’t really believe in resolutions, because I think we can start new anytime.  But something about the New Year beginning, does give one cause to stop and think about what could be better.  Maybe even to review our priorities.

We had a good Christmas, it went fast and we were exhausted afterward.  It was nice to see family and spend some time with them.  But, yes, there seemed to be a cloud hanging over the events.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but later, while I was sick and had to rest to catch up…it gave me time to think about it.

It’s not that we plan to get so busy, it just happens.  We always intend to contact everyone and send our Christmas greetings.  I even made cards this year…fifty of them!  But they are mostly still on my table.  I just want you all to know that even if you don’t hear from me, I still love you, pray for you and want the Lord’s best for you.

Now that the new year has started, it seems silly to send out my cards.  But my greeting hasn’t changed.  Happy New Year! God is good, ALL the time.  And whatever this new year holds, good or bad.  We know WHO is in control and can trust HIM, with EVERYTHING and EVERYONE.

I am working on a new calendar…in fact it is almost finished, just needs proofed and printed.  If you want one, I’d be happy to send it, but I’d like to get some proceeds to help with the much needed shed at the cottage.  So for anyone who sends me at least $10 I will send you a calendar of all the family birthdays.  I will work on an address book next.

So, get your orders in, so I know how many to make!

Love to all,

Kim

Memories December 13, 2008

rose_in_snow1We all have them.  And they are very prevalent this year especially.  There is no way we can go through this Christmas without some sadness, loss and tears.  But we do have our memories!  Precious clips of life with each of our loved ones that left us this year.  It is overwhelming to think so many have moved on from us in such a short time.  As I put together our new family calendar, there are some names missing.

But they can’t disappear from our memories.  A quote I once heard said ” God gives us memories so we can have roses in December.”  This December, we need some roses….so remember.

Remember the Christmases past. (and the springs and the summers and the autumns) We are one crazy, fun family and there is much to remember.  Share some of those roses with others…it helps.  At our church we are attempting a contata this year.  The title is Christmas at home.  The theme song goes something like this.

Christmas at home, Christmas at home, Lord how I want to go home…my heart’s yearnin so, for I long to go…home at Christmas time.  I personally had a really hard time singing that song.  My mind would play this slideshow each time we sang it…of Christmases past.  I could hardly get through it seeing all my loved ones.  But, the memories are sweet, reminders of the love we have shared.  And how blessed we have been and are still.

This Christmas will be sad, but make it sweet and let’s help each other through it with armsful of roses.  Remember…..

I love you!

Update on Ryan November 3, 2008

Ryan is going to be hit with large doses of chemo over the next three days.  PRAY he can withstand the chemo and that it will do the job they intend it to do… He is already weak from all he has been through!

Here is a song I was reminded of today…

No More Night

The timeless theme, earth and heaven will pass away

It’s not a dream, God will make all things new that day

Gone is the curse from which I stumbled and fell

Evil is banished to eternal hell

NO MORE NIGHT, NO MORE PAIN

NO MORE TEARS, NEVER CRYING AGAIN

PRAISES TO THE GREAT “I AM’

WE WILL LIVE IN THE LIGHT OF THE RISEN LAMB

See all around, Now the nations bow down to sing

The only sound is the praises to Christ our King

Slowly the names from the book are read

I know the King, so there’s no need to dread

NO MORE NIGHT, NO MORE PAIN

NO MORE TEARS, NEVER CRYING AGAIN

PRAISES TO THE GREAT “I AM’

WE WILL LIVE IN THE LIGHT OF THE RISEN LAMB

BRIDGE

See over there, it’s a mansion prepared for me

Where I can live with my Savior eternally

NO MORE NIGHT, NO MORE PAIN

NO MORE TEARS, NEVER CRYING AGAIN

PRAISES TO THE GREAT “I AM’

WE WILL LIVE IN THE LIGHT OF THE RISEN LAMB

Glen has let us know that Ryan isn’t doing so well and really needs some prayers. I don’t know how many of you actually read this little blog, but please don’t forget him. He needs our support! I will try to get the address. Maybe Glen could get cards to him if we sent them. It is the least we can do!

Love to all,
Kim

Updates September 24, 2008

Ok, we need to be able to update on everyone! Uncle Jim was recently in the hospital and had a stint put in (at least what I am hearing) I guess he is home doing “ok”. Any news?

I went to the after hours clinic the other night with what we think is an infection…I go back on Friday for a check on it. It is in my neck and very painful! YIKES! Yes, I took the good stuff.

Not much news other than that!

Monarch hatched! September 22, 2008

Ok, just wanted to share what we’ve been doing lately. Sarah was over one day with the babies and we were outside. Sarah found a caterpillar and we kept it in Ethan’s disposable sippy cup. Sure enough it was a Monarch caterpillar! So we have carefully watched it eat and make it’s chrysalis and then this morning we noticed that it had turned colors and you could see the wings a bit. Sure enough by 10 am we had a just hatched Monarch! Emily has had a great time watching this and made a bigger box for it to fly in.

She is doing a bug collection for science this fall but isn’t convinced she should include her new found friend! So we will have to see how the saga of the Monarch turns out! I’ll try to post pictures later. It has been really interesting to watch!

Autumn is almost here! September 19, 2008

I’m not really anxious, I just can’t believe the summer went so fast!  I was just scrapbooking (the first time in a long time) and decided to do my birthday and some favorites.  Of course my favorites are my hubby, children (including daughter-in-laws) and grandchildren :)  Oh, sooo cute!  Then my extended family and friends. BUT, I also like roses and daisies and scrapbooking and researching my family tree and gardening!  I love vacationing in Silver Lake, I love our cottage.  I love the memories. I was just thinking while working on this new album about ME.  What do I want my family to know about me?  How about YOU!?  What do you want us to know and remember?

As I was working, I didn’t really like something I was putting together.  I thought “I don’t love it.”  that is a frequent saying of Aunt Liz’s.  I tend to use it occasionally.  It often fits!  Well, I don’t love the way this summer has gone….but I am looking forward to a  calmer fall.  AND I DO love you all!

What are you up to lately?  Drop in, leave a quick note!  We all would like to know!

Grandparents Day September 7th September 6, 2008

I found this today over at www.imommies.com.  It is a great idea.

Don’t Let Your Family’s History Slip Away

Ten ways to preserve your family’s unique story this National Grandparents Day

Grandparents can take the lead in helping younger generations preserve their family history this National Grandparent’s Day, according to Milford, Ohio resident Hazel Cole Kendle, the 88-year-old first-time author of the just-released Cole Family Christmas. This year’s National Grandparent’s Day will mark its 30th anniversary on Sept. 7.

“It’s a myth that young people don’t want to hear the stories their grandparents can tell,” said Kendle. “However, too often grandparents and great-grandparents feel like they must wait to be asked before telling those stories. Realize that family members often won’t ask for the first story, but once you start talking, they’ll be begging for more.”

Jennifer Liu Bryan of Alexandria, Virginia, Kendle’s granddaughter-in-law and co-author, points out that grandparents don’t have to stop with stories, either.

“There are many ways to pass along family traditions,” said Bryan. “Remember the favorite dessert your grandmother used to make or the dishes she received on her wedding day. Each item serves as a connection to the past, but we have to work to keep that chain from breaking.”

For this reason, Kendle and Bryan suggest 10 ways families can preserve their memories this Grandparents Day.

1. Construct a family memory book. Gather pictures of family members across generations and make a scrapbook by writing in the stories that have been passed on through generations.

2. Play a game the grandparents used to play. Kids had fun long before video games were invented. Play a game from the analog era to show the grandchildren how it was done.

3. Read a book your grandparents read when they were your age. Grandparents can make classic children’s literature even more rewarding by adding in details of what life was like at the time.

4. Learn how to cook grandma’s favorite recipe. Whether that’s a traditional holiday dish or her secret cookie recipe, spend time in the kitchen with grandma cooking a recipe that can be passed down to the next generation.

5. Take part in a grandparent’s favorite hobby. Whether that is painting, gardening, or putting together puzzles, spend time with your grandparents and learn about the daily activities that bring them joy.

6. Pick out one interesting, unique or strange family heirloom. Grandparents can explain the history of the item and why it is special to the family.

7. Learn where you came from. Drive through your grandparents’ old neighborhood and listen to stories about their old neighbors or family outings at the local park.

8. Go back in time to the movies. Rent a classic the grandparents enjoyed seeing on the big screen years ago. There are plenty of great old movies other than just the ones that run during the holidays.

9. Ask to look at your grandparent’s wedding pictures or high school yearbooks. Learn about their best friends and see pictures of them when they were so much younger.

10. Preserve a memory for future generations. Make a home video with them and let them discuss their favorite stories.

Next Chapter Press has released 60,000 copies of “Cole Family Christmas”, a true, tender, and wholly unforgettable tale that has been passed down from generation to generation through a coal miner’s family.

When one of Mama’s few possessions, a treasured purple glass bowl with fluted edges, is accidentally broken by exuberant children rushing in from the outdoors, and an unlikely blizzard prevents Papa from coming home after working extra hours at the coal mine on Christmas Eve, hopes for a picture perfect Christmas were quickly quelled. However, the hours that followed that turbulent Christmas morning created a joyful story that has lived in family lore for years.

Do you remember the days of September…..? September 3, 2008

Ok, so I am showing my whole 50 years!!! Yep, I said it, everyone else has already made a big deal of it, so…oh, well!?  It seems to be an unusual September so far.  We are having some rain from Gustav, but not much it is gentle, but it is nice to have the windows open!

School is off to a start.  That’s about all I can say right now.  Emily and I decided that if we have a good day by Friday, it will have been a good start and we’ll try not to think about Tuesday!!!  With the hard drive malfunctioning, I am having to actually teach her!  Spanish is the big thing this year. She is very excited to learn it…although it is by immersion, so trying to figure out the directions on worksheets is a challenge.  She also will be starting piano soon and is excited about that. :)  Seventh grade is ON, whether we are ready or NOT!!

Just wanted to touch base with everyone.  I have much more to say but it is getting late for a Wednesday.  Please be sure and check out comments because that is where everyone is responding. :)  Love to all! Kim
